About Better by the Pound
We are a group of dedicated, caring, and experienced volunteers who provide a much needed service to our canine friends from local shelters, rescues, and humane societies. Better by the Pound was formed in 2008 with the goal of assisting problem dogs whose chances of adoption were compromised due to behavioral issues.
We assist fellow canine rescue and shelter organizations with their special needs dogs-- dogs whose chances for adoption may be at risk due to age, medical issues, stress-related behaviors, or lack of social skills. Rehabilitation is achieved through a combination of arranged short-term foster care, individualized attention, and re-socialization efforts. Adoption to a permanent home is the ultimate goal for all dogs.
We offer affiliate rescues and shelters:
1) Education and Training for volunteers & foster families. Topics include:
A) Basic Dog Handling skills
B) Basic Behavior Modification training
C) Strategies for the Prevention of Behavioral Issues
D) Deference-based Puppy Training
2) Direct Training and Rehabilitation of Problem Dog Behaviors. We specialize in difficult dogs.
